Fodor's Review:

Formerly the Aqueduto da Carioca (Carioca Aqueduct), this structure with 42 massive stone arches was built between 1744 and 1750 to carry water from the Carioca River in the hillside neighborhood of Santa Teresa to Centro. In 1896 the city transportation company converted the then-abandoned aqueduct to a viaduct, laying trolley tracks along it. Since then Rio's distinctive trolley cars (called "bondes" because they were financed by foreign bonds) have carried people between Santa Teresa and Centro. Guard your belongings particularly closely when you ride the open-sided bondes.

  • Cost: R$1
  • Open: Bondes leave every 20 minutes 6 AM-10 PM
  • Metrô: Carioca or Cinelandia
