Rio de Janeiro Restaurants

With nearly a thousand restaurants, Rio's dining choices are broad, from low-key Middle Eastern cafés to elegant contemporary eateries with award-winning kitchens and first-class service. The succulent offerings in the churrascarias (restaurants specializing in grilled meats) can be mesmerizing for meat lovers—especially the places that serve rodízio-style (grilled meat on skewers is continually brought to your table—until you can eat no more). Hotel restaurants often serve the national dish, feijoada (a hearty stew of black beans and pork), on Saturday—sometimes on Friday, too. Wash it down with a chopp (the local draft beer; pronounced "shop") or a caipirinha (sugarcane rum, lime, and sugar).

Troisgros creates the menu together with his equally talented son Thomas, applying nouvelle-cooking techniques to meals with all-Brazilian ingredients; three course or five- or seven-course tasting menus with and without wine pairings are available.

The menu, which changes every 45 days at this light-filled open-floor-plan restaurant, features a series of small, elaborately prepared dishes, including a tiny burger made of duck confit and foie-gras powder and served with guava "ketchup."

  • 5. Quadrifoglio

    $$$$ | Jardim Botânico
    Closed Permanently

Many locals consider cozy Quadrifoglio to be Rio's best Italian restaurant. The restaurant has been around since 1991, and the service and the food are impeccable, the former perhaps because much of the original waitstaff still works here. Standout starters include a comforting white bean soup with shrimp, and a salad of arugula, goat cheese, walnuts, and pear in a balsamic reduction, while the potato gnocchi with steak and porcini mushrooms is one of many stellar mains. Ice cream with baked figs is among the justly famous desserts.
