Rio de Janeiro

Simply put, Rio de Janeiro is sports mad. Though much of the frenzy centers on soccer, other sports—among them volleyball, basketball, beach soccer, beach volleyball, and futevôlei (a soccer-volleyball hybrid)—are taken extremely seriously. Invigorated by the success of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, facilities and funding have improved across the city and Rio is more sports-mad than ever. In addition to the vast sums spent to renovate existing and create new sports facilities and an Olympic village in the city's West Zone, significant investments are being made to upgrade the public-transportation system.
