When to Go

The busiest and most expensive time to travel is during Christmas, Easter, Carnival, and the month of July—because most Brazilians take their vacations at this time. The most exciting time to be in the colonial towns is during the Semana Santa (the Holy Week of Easter), when there are colorful processions of joyous locals in the streets, and everyone celebrates. Temperatures are usually around 24°C (75°F) in summer and 17°C (63°F) in winter. Summer is the rainy season, winter is dry but cooler; sturdy shoes and jackets are highly recommended at all times. To avoid crowds and rain, travel from April to June or August to November.
