Spelunking

For amateur spelunkers the mountains of Minas are replete with caves to be explored, though they must be seen with a tour guide who is available at the entrance booth. Gruta de Maquiné. The most popular cavern, with six large chambers, is the Gruta de Maquiné, 113 km (70 mi) northwest of Belo Horizonte near Cordisburgo. Gruta da Lapinha. The Gruta da Lapinha is 36 km (22 mi) north of Belo, near the city of Lagoa Santa, on the road leading from Confins Airport. You can tour the cave Tuesday-Sunday 8:30-4:30 for R$10. 031/3689-8422. www.lagoasanta.mg.gov.br.
