Plaza Murillo and the streets that surround it in the downtown area of the city are steeped in history and easy to cover in a morning of wandering. The original square dates from 1549, the year after the city was founded, and was renovated in 1870. The charm of the plaza makes it fun just to sit and watch the world–and the occasional marching band–go by. Nearby you’ll find the city’s grand governmental buildings and some of its most beautiful churches, as well as the charming Calle Jaén.
