Carmelo—a legendary old-school winemaker—is the passionate owner of this operation. He answers the phone, greets you at the door, and personally conducts tours (in Spanish only), drawing wine from the barrel and entertaining guests with anecdotes and fascinating facts about everything from growing grapes to preserving corks. Famous for his Cabernet Sauvignon, his top quality wines have a cultlike following (only 10,000 bottles are produced at a time). The bodega is nothing fancy, but as Carmelo likes to point out, he puts all of his energy where he feels it needs to go: into making incredible wines, not into building and maintaining a flashy facility.
