Carmelo, the friendly and passionate owner and winemaker behind this operation, answers the phone, greets you at the door, and personally conducts tours (in Spanish only), drawing wine from the barrel and entertaining guests with anecdotes and entertaining facts about everything from growing grapes to making wine and how to drink it, to the preservation of corks. He is a legendary winemaker of the old school, and is famous for his Cabernet Sauvignon. Producing only 10,000 bottles at a time, he notes the harvest and bottling dates on the label. He has an extraordinary reputation and has accumulated a cultlike following for his top-quality wines. The bodega is nothing fancy, but as Carmelo likes to point out, he puts all of his energy into where he feels it needs to go: into making incredible wines, not into the pomp and flash of maintaining a fancy bodega building.
