Tucumán Province's bustling capital and Argentina's fourth-largest city is San Miguel de Tucumán, or just Tucumán in local parlance. The streets are often crowded with both students from the local university as well as businesspeople, and the traffic is often heavy, though everything grinds to a halt each afternoon when the heat gets too intense.
The city is full of grand colonial architecture, broad avenues, and leafy plazas, all of which are lined with buildings done in a bewildering mix of architectural styles. Although the center of Tucumán isn't beautiful by conventional standards, it bursts with good restaurants, bars, outdoor cafés, and nightlife.
