Salta

Getting Here and Around

It's a two-hour flight to Salta from Buenos Aires. Aerolíneas Argentinas flies four times a day; Andes and LAN both once a day. From Aeropuerto El Aybal it's a 10-km (6-mi) drive southeast into Salta, 15 pesos by taxi or 5 pesos by bus.

Balut buses (12 trips daily) connect Salta to San Salvador de Jujuy, Humahuaca (six trips daily), and Tucumán (once a day). El Indio has two buses a day to Cafayate (four hours). Marco Rueda has one or two buses daily to Cachi (4½ hours); check the day before, as most leave early in the morning.

In the city most sights are within walking distance of one another, and taxis are cheap and easy to find. Renting a car does make exploring the province much easier. That said, many roads are unpaved and can be dangerous in bad weather, so the price of cars is rather high, approaching 200 pesos per day.

MoviTrack offers excursions around Salta, but is best known for its Bus to the Clouds, an oxygen-equipped vehicle that follows the same route as the Tren a las Nubes. Trips last 15-plus hours, and depart daily in winter and nearly every day in summer. Check the MoviTrack Web site for schedules and prices.
