It was originally housed in the School of San Francisco when it was founded by Father Gomez, a Franciscan missionary, in 1926. It moved to the present building in 1949 and is currently run by Father Pugliese, a protégé of Father Gomez who is well over 90 years old, and one part-time assistant. The indigenous artifacts of stone, metal, bone, and clay, all with typewritten explanatory cards, number more than 9,000 pieces—there's even a cabinet of human skulls in a back room.
