Cerro Chapelco (Chapelco Ski Area). The ski area and summer resort of Cerro Chapelco is 23 km (14 mi) from town—18 km paved and 5 km of dirt road. Ideal for families and beginner-to-intermediate skiers, the area has modern facilities and lifts, including a high-speed telecabina (gondola) from the base. On a clear day almost all the runs are visible from the top (6,534 feet), and Lanín Volcano dominates the horizon. Lift tickets run from 170 pesos per day in low season to 285 pesos in high season. Equipment rental facilities are available at the base camp (95 pesos-150 pesos per day for skis, boots, and poles). On some days cars need chains to get up to the mountain, so call and check the latest conditions before driving up. Taxis can also take you up or down for about 45 pesos each way. The summer Adventure Center has mountain biking for experts and classes for beginners, horseback rides, hiking, archery, a swimming pool, an alpine slide, and children's activities.
