Mirador de las Bandurrias (Bandurrias Overlook)

Mirador de las Bandurrias (Bandurrias Overlook) Review

From town you can walk, mountain bike, or drive to the Mirador de las Bandurrias. It's a half-day hike round-trip (5 km ) up a steep hill through a dense forest of cypress and oak. The reward is a view of town and the lake and a visit to a Mapuche village (Paraje Trompul) of about 40 families, most of whom work in town. You can visit the village for a few pesos, buy refreshments in the quincho (café), and see weavings and wood carvings (also for sale). If you're walking, take Avenida San Martín to the lake, turn right, cross the bridge behind the waterworks plant over Puahullo Creek, and then head uphill on a path around the mountain. By car, leave town on RP48 and drive about 4 km (2½ mi) to a turnoff (no sign) on your left. Take the turn and continue 3 km (2 mi) to the Curruhuinca Community, where you pay a fee to arrive at the lookout (about two hours round-trip).
