The Lake District Places

Parque Nacional Lanín

Getting Here and Around

Three towns have access to the park. The northernmost section is reached from the town of Aluminé (145 km [90 mi] west of Zapala on RP46), a typical Andean town with no paved streets but an abundance of nearby lakes (Aluminé, Quillén, and Mohquehue being the most accessible). The resort town of Pehuenia is a good base for exploring. Junín de los Andes, in the middle section, is at the end of the paved roads from either San Martín or Bariloche. San Martín, the major town in the park, is in the southern portion. All three of these towns have roads leading to the border with Chile.

Intendencia de Parques Nacionales. For information on the park, go to the Intendencia de Parques Nacionales in San Martín. They have maps and information on all the parks and trails in the region, as well as fishing permits and information on big-game hunting. E. Frey 749, Neuquén, 8370. 2972/427-233. Weekdays 8-1:30.
