RN40 west from Bariloche 66 km, past Villa Masacardi, turn right on dirt road to west end of Lago Mascardi, Bariloche, Río Negro, 8400, Argentina
Named for the mountain that towers above the wild landscape only 25 km (15½ miles) up the road, this stone-and-log lodge on Lago Mascardi has been owned by the Vereertbrugghen family since 1929. The main attraction, not surprisingly, is a visit to Monte Tronadór. You can walk up to its glaciers or trek through the forest to waterfalls that tumble from the frozen snow above; ambitious hikers can climb to a refugio and return in a day.
