Maybe it's a stretch to call Los Antiguos the best-kept secret in Patagonia, but this remote little farming town on the Chilean border is a pleasant spot to relax for a day or two. A fertile slice of land on the windy shore of Lago Buenos Aires, Los Antiguos was historically a retirement home of sorts for elderly members of the indigenous population, who would gather here in their golden years to enjoy the comforts of a relatively warm climate. The name Los Antiguos means "the ancients," in reference to this extinct tradition. The best reasons to visit Los Antiguos are to enjoy the spectacular trout fishing in nearby waters, gorge on ripe cherries in the summertime, and either cross into Chile or break up the journey between Bariloche and the far south.
