Estancia Jesuítica Jesús María (Estancia San Isidro Labrador)
Estancia Jesuítica Jesús María (Estancia San Isidro Labrador) Review
The stately three-wing Estancia Jesuítica Jesús Maríawas once the nerve center of the Jesuits' vast holdings in Jesús María. Two stories of arched galleries range around three sides of the main courtyard; behind them lie the priests' living quarters and communal rooms. The estancia's single-nave church is a beautiful example of the Jesuits' no-nonsense building style: the only adornment is the relief work of the cupola, which is thought to have been created by indigenous artisans. Inside the estancia is the Museo Jesuítico Nacional (National Jesuit Museum), which has a 10,000-piece collection that includes religious artifacts, colonial art and furnishings, and agricultural and wine-making paraphernalia.
