Commuter rail lines provide extensive service from the city proper to the suburbs for low prices. A network operated by six companies—Ferrobaires, Ferrovías, Metropolitano, Metrovías, Trenes de Buenos Aires, Tren de la Costa—spreads out from five central stations in Buenos Aires. Lines to the north tend to work fairly well; other lines are seriously run-down and dangerous after dark.
Most suburban trains leave at regular 7- to 20-minute intervals, though there may be less frequent service for trains traveling long distances.
Fares range from 80¢ to 1.85 pesos. Purchase tickets before boarding the train at ticket windows or at coin-operated machines at the stations. Hold on to your ticket until you reach the end of the line. If an official asks for it and you don't have it, you'll have to pay a 3.50–6.50 pesos on-the-spot fine.
Commuter trains to the southern suburbs and La Plata leave from Estación Plaza Constitución. Ferrobaires also runs between here and Mar del Plata daily, and to Pinamar once a week. Extra services are put on in summer. Note that Constitución is a very sketchy neighborhood, especially after dark.
Estación Federico Lacroze, in Chacarita, provides train service to the northeastern part of the city and greater Buenos Aires. You can also reach Posadas in Misiones Province on the Gran Capitán, Trenes del Litoral's twice-weekly service from here. Trains to the western parts of the city and greater Buenos Aires from Estación Plaza Once, in the city center.
Trains running out of Estación Retiro, across from Plaza San Martín, serve the Belgrano and Núñez neighborhoods in the northern part of the city, and greater Buenos Aires' well-to-do northern suburbs, including Tigre. Ferrocentral runs two services each week from the Mitre section of Retiro to Córdoba and to Tucumán. Both services stop at Rosario Norte station in Rosario.
