If James Bond was in town, this is where he'd hang his hat. In fact, Sean Connery has stayed here, because when it comes to sophistication, the Alvear Palace is the best bet in Buenos Aires. It's hosted scores of dignitaries since opening its doors in 1932, and although new and more affordable hotels are making it something of a gray ghost, the Alvear is still stately and swanky. It's all about world-class service and thoughtful touches: butler service, fresh flowers, feather beds with Egyptian-cotton linens. The lunch buffet is out of this world, and the super-chic French restaurant, La Bourgogne, is one of the city's best.
