Besides using sunscreen (do not underestimate the austral sun), the most important safety consideration is taking precautions around wildlife. Do not approach or let your children approach sea lions, penguins, or any other animals, no matter how docile or curious they might seem. Although tap water is safe to drink throughout the region, most travelers still choose to drink bottled water, just to be on the safe side. Finally, there are hospitals in every town except Bahía Bustamante.
