You can't help but watch the kitchen door at this elegant restaurant, as each dish the waiters carry out is a work of art. Take the eye-catching pato asado con mil especies (roast duck with 1,000 spices). The honey-brown breast is accompanied by a steamed pear and a pepper bubbling over with basil risotto. Other dishes, like the pasta with squid and artichokes, are just as astonishing. Make sure to peruse the wine list, one of the best in town. In a colonial-style building on a quiet street, the restaurant itself is lovely, with pumpkin-color walls covered with original artwork.

If Astrid or Gaston comes to your table, it will be the dining experience of a lifetime; otherwise, it's just the best meal you've had this year. Price is much less than one would expect, and the quality and presentation of the various food items from appetizers to dessert is without peer. What I found very entertaining was that the staff EXPECTS the guests to have a sense of style and decorum...lacking that, they will ask you to leave. Best meal of forty years of trying...
