Confitería La Ideal

¢-$, Cafe, El Centro

Fodor's Review:

Part of the charm of this spacious 1918 coffeeshop-milonga is its sense of nostalgia: think fleur-de-lis motifs, time-worn European furnishings, and stained glass. No wonder they chose to film the 1998 movie The Tango Lesson here. La Ideal is famous for its palmeritas (glazed cookies) and tea service. Tango lessons are offered Monday through Thursday from noon to 3, with a full-blown tango ball Wednesday and Saturday from 3 to 8. The waitstaff seem to be caught up in their own dreams -- service is listless.
