More Kennebunkport than Western, this distinguished hotel is the park's oldest. Dating from 1891, the white-and-pastel-color hotel has maintained an air of refinement that Old Faithful Inn can't because of its constant tour buses full of visitors. Just off the lobby, a spacious sunroom offers priceless views of Lake Yellowstone at sunrise or sunset. It's also a great place to play cards, catch up on a newspaper from the gift shop, or just soak in the grandeur of a 117-year-old National Historic Landmark. Note the tile-mantel fireplace, the etched windows of the gift shop, and the beautiful bay windows. Rooms have white wicker furnishings, giving them a light, airy feeling; some have lake views. There is one two-room suite with lake views that has been used as accommodations for more than one U.S. president. The least expensive rooms are in an annex, not the original building. Pros: An oasis of elegance in the park, with the best views of any park lodging. Cons: The most expensive property in the park (even Old Faithful Inn has some rooms under $100), restaurant expensive and not particularly kid-friendly.
