Fodor's Review:

This gleaming new visitor center is the pride of the park service with elaborate, interactive exhibits for adults and kids. The focus here is volcanoes and earthquakes, but there are also exhibits on Native Americans and park wildlife, including bison and wolves. The video titled "Water, Heat & Rock" is a riveting look at the geo- and hydrothermal basis for the park. As at all visitor centers, you can obtain park information, backcountry camping permits, etc. The adjacent bookstore, operated by the Yellowstone Association, is the best in the park with guidebooks, trail maps, gifts, and hundreds of books on the park, its history, and the science surrounding it.

  • Open: Late May-Aug., daily 8-7; Sept., daily 8-6; Oct. 1-14, daily 9-5.

We love this visitor center, especially the huge relief map of the park and the displays on volcanoes, earthquakes, and hotspots. The movies are well worth the time to watch. Very modern bathroom facilities!
