  In A Word: Character

  I stayed at the Chamberlin Inn during an ice-climbing trip in February. I had the misfortune of catching a terrible cold right before my trip was scheduled, but I chose to tough it out and go on the trip hoping it would pass quickly. Sadly, my cold got much worse and it bloomed with an exciting array of side effects, such as nausea, chills, loss of appetite, hideous congestion, and rib-cracking deep coughs. On climbing day, I woke up green. Alas, I spent the entire day in the hotel. It actually turned out to be quite relaxing. Is it weird that being sick means a chance to take it easy? One way to get to know a hotel is to spend an entire day in it. The Chamberlin Inn is a place of wonder; a nice blend of old world charm with outstanding hospitality. I could tell that the owners employed painstaking detail with their recent renovations to meet the integrity of the space. They use actual keys for the hotel and the rooms, which made me a bit nostalgic for the days before room cards. If ever there were a place to be stuck in your hotel room on a vacation, this is it. Every room is decorated differently and some of them have little kitchens too. At least one of the rooms had a claw-foot bathtub, quite rare. They leave the doors open to the rooms that are vacant and encourage guests to take a peek. There is a lovely little sunroom, perfect for relaxing with a cup of tea that has large windows overlooking Cody's main street. There's a library and an adorable kitchen with lots of thoughtful details. The best part was the discovery of the guest ledger that Ernest Hemingway had signed when he stayed at the Chamberlin Inn. You can request to stay in the same room that Hemingway stayed in! The staff checked on me multiple times to make sure I was alive and even collaborated with a few people from my travel group to see to it that I had hot soup and enough meds to sate the sick beast that had taken residency in my body. I had a few chances to chat with the owner, Ev, who just couldn't be nicer or more interesting. Don't miss the opportunity to chat with the owners if you stay there. The location is ideal too--right in the heart of Cody, across from the historic Irma Hotel. I would stay there again and definitely recommend it to others.
