Sports and the Outdoors

Bicycling

The nearest place to go biking is Fort Worden State Park, but you can range as far afield as Fort Flagler, the lower Dungeness trails (no bikes are allowed on the spit itself), or across the water to Whidbey Island.

Boat Cruise

Puget Sound Express. This company runs summer speedboat connections between Port Townsend and Friday Harbor from May through September (boats depart from Port Townsend at 9, arriving in Friday Harbor at noon; the return trip departs from Friday Harbor at 2:30 and arrives back in Port Townsend at 5. Four-hour guaranteed-sighting whale-watching trips depart from Friday Harbor at 10 and 2:30 May–late September to view orcas (killer whales) and at 10 from mid-March–end April to see migrating gray whales. Kayaking

PT Outdoors. Located at Fort Worden State Park and open seasonally, this company offers kayaking classes and guided trips. Waterfront tours are $60; three-hour tours to Bird Island are $100; specialty tours can also be arranged with at least a week's advance notice. All tours require reservations. Scuba Diving
