A stay at the Sou'wester is a bohemian experience. Proprietors Len and Miriam Atkins came to Seaview from South Africa, by way of Israel and Chicago, and they're always up for a stimulating conversation. The lodge was built in 1892 as the summer retreat for Henry Winslow Corbett, a Portland banker, timber baron, shipping and railroad magnate, and U.S. senator. Soirees and chamber music concerts are sometimes held in the parlor. Guest rooms are eclectic. Beach cottages and the classic mobile-home units just behind the beach have cooking facilities; you're also welcome to make breakfast in the homey kitchen. Pros: Very unique lodgings, interesting history, involved and attentive owners. Cons: Not for luxury-seekers, some rooms don't have private baths.
