Though the immensely popular Taste of India (down the street at the corner of 55th) has a much better ambience—no thought has been put into deco at this no-frills restaurant—Bengal Tiger has become the new neighborhood favorite thanks to its authentic (which often means very spicy) dishes. Most of the menu will yield familiar words—naan, tandoor, vindaloo, tikka masala—but there are a few East Indian items not normally found in curry houses dominated by northern Indian specialties. The lunch buffet is $8.
