As it was once an airport, it's not surprising that this 200-acre park northeast of the University District (U-District) is flat and open. The paved trails are wonderful for cycling, in-line skating, and pushing a stroller. Many kids have learned to ride their two-wheelers here; quite a few more have spent time on the large playground. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails; a large off-leash area includes one of the few public beaches where pooches can swim. Farther south, on the mile-long shore, there's a swimming beach, a seasonal wading pool, and a boat launch. The park also has tennis courts, sports fields, and a terrific kite-flying hill. Be sure to look for the unique public art. The Fin Project: From Swords to Plowshares uses submarine fins to depict a pod of orca whales. No Appointment Necessary has two bright red chairs extended into the sky. The Sound Garden (at the neighboring National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration campus) has steel pipes that give off sounds when the wind blows for an art display that you can hear as well as see. From Downtown, take I-5 north to the Northeast 65th Street exit, turn right and continue east to Sand Point Way Northeast.
