Part beach and part park, threaded by biking and running paths, this is the place where David Denny, John Low, and Lee Terry arrived in September 1851, ready to found a city. They stayed here for six months before moving to what is now Pioneer Square; a marker shows where they landed. Also in the park is one of 195 Lady Liberty replicas found around the country. This one, near the 2700 block of Alki Avenue SW, was erected by Boy Scouts in 1952 as part of their national "Strengthening the Arm of Liberty" campaign. The so-called Miss Liberty (or Little Liberty) is a popular meeting point for beachfront picnics and dates. Marvel at the lustrous 50 acres of rugged old-growth forest at Schmitz Park (5551 SW Admiral Way, West Seattle), steps from Alki Beach. Along the neighborhood's southwest edge, near the Fauntleroy ferry terminal, Lincoln Park (5551 SW Admiral Way, West Seattle) sets acres of old forests, rocky beaches, and such recreational facilities as a playground, a pool, and tennis courts, against views of Puget Sound.
