The flashier Jai Thai restaurant on Fremont Avenue might catch a lot of visitors as they get off the bus, but locals know to keep walking down 36th Street to a little house that produces some of the best Thai food in Seattle. Kwanjai serves simple, authentic (just check out grandma chopping vegetables in the open kitchen) dishes; curries are very good, as are the seafood specials. Be careful when you tell them how spicy you want your food—even two stars can be hot enough to make your nose run. This is a no-frills kind of place, but the tangerine walls and warm lighting make it cozy at night.
