Upscale comfort food is almost as popular in this city as Asian fusion, and Crave gets the gold star for its wonderful takes on American standards, its cool industrial-chic space, and its espresso bar that opens at 7 AM. Grilled cheese is made with sharp cheddar, apple slices, and sourdough bread. Mac and cheese has fontina cheese and shiitake mushrooms; the smoked paprika chicken comes with a spring pea-and-hominy succotash. On weekends, brunch replaces lunch service; try a pomegranate mimosa with your French toast or omelet. The dining room is tiny and fills up fast; service suffers a bit when it gets busy. One note of warning: though dining here is usually a pleasant experience, don't expect any of your fellow customers to be in a good mood -- the crowd is mixed, but is often heavy with angst-ridden hipsters discussing their relationship problems.
