Henry Art Gallery

Henry Art Gallery Review

The Henry is perhaps the best reason to take a side trip to the U-District. The large gallery consistently presents sophisticated and thought-provoking work. Notable recent examples: large-scale installations by environmental artist Maya Lin, photography by Kiki Smith, and a comprehensive survey of the multimedia works of William Kentridge. Exhibits pull from many different genres and include mixed media, photography, 19th- and 20th-century paintings, and textiles from the permanent collection. Its permanent installation, Light Reign, is a "Skyspace" from artist James Turrell—an elliptical chamber that allows visitors to view the sky (more than a few people have used this as a meditation spot); at night the chamber is illuminated by thousands of LED lights.
