This former gold rush-era hotel has a vaulted, exposed-brick interior courtyard and one or two interesting shops. The Grand Central Bakery is the main attraction here; you'll see its breads and pastries featured in stores, coffee shops, and restaurants throughout the city. On the ground floor, A. J. Smith & Co. is a fun place to sift through vintage prints and collectibles. Go downstairs to see the wares (and the artists at work) at the Pottery School, sigh over the Japanese paper art at Tai Designs, or just take a load off on one of the benches.
