$$$$, French, Ballard
Fodor's Review:
On an unattractive corner somewhere halfway between Ballard and Fremont is one of the city's definitive French restaurants. The intimate, rustic-chic spot doesn't quite know if it's an unassuming bistro or a romantic, special-occasion dining room, but it sure knows how to charge for the experience. This will be one of the most expensive meals you'll have in the city, but if chef-owner Bruce Naftaly and staff are on their game, it will also be one of the best. Naftaly uses classic French techniques and locally grown ingredients to create stunning dishes such as his roast duckling with black currant sauce (using homemade cassis); or king salmon poached in champagne and gooseberry sauce. Pastry chef Sara Naftaly's dessert menu might include a flourless chocolate cake with raspberries and almond crème anglaise. Though the tasting menus seem like a good deal, patrons seem to prefer ordering à la carte. If you don't want to pay sky-high prices for the full experience, go next door to Sambar and order from an abbreviated bar menu.
