Seattle Sweet Spots
Seattle is already known for coffee. Now how about a slice of pie with it—or a donut, or a cupcake, or an ice-cream cone? These are a few of our favorites among the city's growing number of sweet spots:
Pie is so old-fashioned that it's become trendy again, at places like Pie in Fremont and at the Seattle Center, at High 5 Pie on Capitol Hill, and at A La Mode on Phinney Ridge.
Seattle cupcake fans are as loyal to their favorite shops as the city's baseball fans are to their Mariners. Trophy Cupcakes and Cupcake Royale, both with several locations around Seattle and the Eastside, are the prime contenders (Trophy has more elegant specialty flavors, while Royale favors local ingredients and has more grown-up options, including rotating monthly flavors like the Boozy Rumball). Other don't-miss cupcake shop contenders are Cake Envy by Green Lake and Yellow Leaf in Belltown.
Top Pot, the high-end donut shop with several locations in Seattle and on the Eastside, once warranted a snack stop by President Barack Obama but vegans swear by Mighty-O Donuts in Wallingford, which is organic to boot (many coffee shops carry their donuts). And if you're visiting Pike Place Market, the Daily Dozen Doughnut is pretty irresistible with adorable, made-while-you-watch mini donuts dusted in powdered sugar.
For ice cream, top spots include Molly Moon Ice Cream, with locations in Wallingford, on Capitol Hill, Madrona, and on Queen Anne, favors locally grown and organic ingredients in tempting and trendy combinations like balsamic strawberry and salted licorice. D'Ambrosio Gelato in Ballard and on Capitol Hill serves unbeatably authentic Italian gelato—don't miss the pistachio. And Full Tilt Ice Cream in Ballard, Columbia City, the University District, and White Center provides ethnically tinged flavors like Thai Iced Tea and Horchata—plus Mexican paletas (ice pops), a selection of vegan ice cream, and an array of pinball machines for customers to play.
