The 1940s Governor Dinwiddie hotel in the center of Portsmouth's Olde Towne business district was beautifully restored in 2005. Guest rooms are furnished in reproduction Queen Anne with satin quilted spreads, ecru walls, and moss woodwork. Museums, restaurants, and the waterfront are within a few blocks Pros: a Historic Hotel of America, recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Cons: although it's only 3 mi from the center of Norfolk, it's a little far to compete with hotels in that city.
