Portsmouth, across the Elizabeth River from Norfolk, has a well-maintained historic area called Olde Towne, which has handsome buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The ferry ride from Norfolk is a fun trip, and you can easily spend a couple of hours strolling around. If you are traveling with a family, the Children's Museum is an excellent diversion.
