When to Go

Summer is prime time on the Eastern Shore. Weekend vacationers and families fill the small towns starting in May, and the water is warm for swimming through October. The July Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction is an annual favorite, while in fall, bird-watchers arrive for a great migration show. There are enough permanent residents to keep towns running in winter, but expect quiet communities and limited services, especially when it comes to places to stay.
