Richmond, Fredericksburg and the Northern Neck Sights
Richmond, 100 mi south of Washington, DC, on the James River, is the state's historic capital. It's easy to get here on I-95. Midway between Washington and Richmond on I-95, Fredericksburg is a lovely place to relax and retrace 18th- and 19th-century history in homes and museums and on nearby battlefields. About 20 mi east of Fredericksburg, the Northern Neck begins. There's no public transportation to this rural area, but a car lets you wander at will among its many historic sites and water views. Ashland, in Hanover County about 20 mi north of Richmond, is the birthplace of Patrick Henry. Petersburg, with its Civil War history, is a mere half hour south of Richmond.
