Chain Bridge

Fodor's Review

Named for the chains that held up one of the earlier bridges that linked D.C. and Virginia, the bridge was built to enable cattlemen to bring Virginia herds to the slaughterhouses along the Maryland side of the Potomac. During the Civil War the bridge was guarded by Union troops stationed at earthen fortifications along what's now Potomac Avenue NW. The Virginia side of the river in the area around Chain Bridge is known for its good fishing and narrow rapids.
