Fodor's Review

Housed in a charming brick manor-style home a half-block off bustling King Street, this hotel is a quiet escape for couples and business travelers. The hotel weaves together a literary theme with local heritage; there’s book-inspired custom artwork, tartan carpets in the rooms and halls, and cool blue accents to evoke the nearby Potomac River. Rooms are done in an updated Colonial style, with inviting (non-functional) fireplaces, bedside charging stations, and yoga mats. The public spaces are sophisticated, with a touch of whimsy, like the kelly green entry walls and artistic ceiling lights. As is customary at Kimpton hotels, there’s complimentary wine served every evening, and once a week the hotel hosts a silent reading hour in the parlor. The on-site Ashlar Restaurant and Bar focuses on mid-Atlantic tavern fare. The service here is top notch, with extra touches like a personalized turndown menu that lets you choose pillow scents and a book delivery for some bedtime reading.
