Don't let the exterior fool you: behind the boarded-up storefront hung with an illuminated Pepsi sign is an exemplary restaurant. The formal dining room upstairs, the lively bistro downstairs, and the cozy mezzanine in between share a French-influenced menu that has Pacific Rim and American Southwest touches. The heated patio and urban terrace are also lovely dining spaces in fall and spring. For a starter try the panfried sweetbread medallions; entrées include steak chinoise with fresh ginger, tamari, and scallion cream sauce. The chefs source their products from local markets and farms, so the menu changes seasonally and the wine list is 300 labels strong. For night owls, they offer a late night menu of appetizers, soups, salads, and sandwiches.

The food at the C&O is uninspired, the service greatly lacking, the ambiance lacking, details (both big and small) greatly overlooked. Overall, our experience at this restaurant was dismal and encourage you to look elsewhere for your dining experience. The details of our experience include being sat directly under the A/C despite have made reservations, requests for it to be turned down were ignored. One entree was served to the table cold and
when sent back the meat was simply zapped in the microwave and no apologies from the kitchen or wait staff. The wait staff at our table knew nothing of the wine list and kept having to run off elsewhere to obtain answers to basic questions. We ordered a mid-end white wine that was served 10 degrees C too cold, affecting the flavour and experience of the wine. Not worth the money.
