Set on 55 acres in west Charlottesville, this local landmark resembles an English country inn, with flower gardens, ponds, and a gristmill from 1834. The rooms have king-size four-poster beds and Italian Anichini linens; many have balconies. Some suites have fireplaces. There are lots of activities here -- even hot-air ballooning, through a nearby outfitter. The Old Mill Room restaurant ($$$-$$$$) serves new American cuisine and includes venison and seafood; the grilled filet mignon is a savory favorite. The $16 luncheon buffet includes an exceptional selection of salads, soups, meats, and desserts.
