Originally built in the 1930s as a retreat for the North Carolina Highway Patrol, this lodge is a place to slow down and enjoy life at the lakeside. All but three of the inn's 17 rooms have lake views, and the others have views of the well-tended gardens, with azaleas, rhododendrons, and other flowers and shrubs. The "gathering room" in the main lodge has soaring ceilings, with rare chestnut paneling, and a rock fireplace whose centerpiece is a huge millstone. Rooms are beautifully furnished with antiques. Rates include a full breakfast, afternoon tea and pastries, and evening hors d'oeuvres and wine.
