Skyline Drive runs 105 mi, alternating between open vistas and forest-hemmed stretches and offering easily accessible wilderness. During weekends and holidays it can seem a little too much like city driving -- a 35-mph speed limit, rubber-necking leaf-lookers, narrow overlook turnouts, and the occasional black bear sighting can back traffic up uncomfortably. It's best to choose a weekday and allow the entire day; you may want to spend an hour or two resting on one roadside boulder. Winter is a wonderful time to experience the park's rugged beauty with few crowds, but many facilities are closed and bouts of ice and snow bring out barricades on parts of the drive.

Taking a drive down Skyline Drive was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had. We saw at least 3 black bears (one up close by the side of the road!), tons of whitetail deer, and the gorgeous scenery should not be missed! Highly recommended!
