West Mountain Inn

144 West Mountain Inn Rd., at Rte. 313, Arlington, Vermont, 05250, USA

This 1810 farmhouse sits on 150 mountainside acres with hiking trails and easy access to the Battenkill River, where you can canoe or go tubing. In summer, innkeeper Amie Emmons lines the front yard with Adirondack chairs that overlook the mountains. You can sled down a former ski slope in winter, or borrow snowshoes or cross-country skis. The resident alpacas will amuse kids, and even if they don't, there's also a room with games and videos. The house is a patchwork of additions and gables, so guest rooms have eccentric configurations. All are comfortable, though, with nice views and sitting areas. The wood-panel dining room has a fireplace and expansive views, making it a pleasant place to linger while sampling the chef's variations on local, fresh New England cuisine.
