Fodor's Review

If you're looking for a relaxing country getaway, this 1808 Federal-style mansion on the wide meadow of a former sheep farm is a good bet. The historic redbrick house strikes a sturdy pose that distinguishes it from daintier inns. Most guest rooms have crown molding, soaring ceilings, and four-poster beds topped with fine linens; a separate two-bedroom cottage has its own kitchen. Owners Gillian and Dennis Pettit, along with their dogs Jack and Gracie, lend an English sensibility to the proceedings. Thousands of acres of nature preserve surround the property's 8 acres of cleared meadow, making it great for hiking and cross-country skiing.
