Vermont's destination spas have come a long way since its au naturel mineral springs attracted affluent 19th-century city dwellers looking to escape the heat, but the principle remains the same: a natural place to restore mind and body. There are three big spas in Stowe one in Manchester, and one in Woodstock.
Spa at Equinox. With mahogany doors and beadboard wainscoting, this spa feels like a country estate. At one end is an indoor pool and outdoor hot tub; at the other end are the treatment rooms. The signature 80-minute Spirit of Vermont combines Reiki, reflexology, and massage. In the co-ed relaxation room, you can nestle into overstuffed chairs next to a two-sided fireplace made of Vermont gneiss. The locker rooms, with marble accents and pottery-bowl wash basins, have steam rooms and saunas. Equinox Resort, 3567 Rte. 7A, Manchester, VT, 05254. 802/362–4700. www.equinoxresort.com.
Spa at Stoweflake. One of the largest spas in New England, the Spa at Stoweflake features a massaging hydrotherapeutic waterfall, a Hungarian mineral pool, 30 treatment rooms, and 120 services like the Bingham Falls Renewal, named after a local waterfall. This treatment begins with a body scrub and a Vichy shower, followed by an aromatherapy oil massage. The spacious men's and women's sanctuaries have saunas, steam rooms, and whirlpool tubs. Spa at Topnotch. An aura of calm pervades the Spa at Topnotch, with its birchwood doors and accents, natural light, and cool colors. Signature services include the Mount Mansfield Saucha, a three-stage herbal body treatment, and the Little River Stone Massage, which uses's the resort's own wood-spice oil. Locker areas are spacious and spotless, with saunas, steam rooms, and whirlpool tubs. Classes in tai chi, yoga, and Pilates are offered throughout the day in the nearby fitness center. Spa and Wellness Center at Stowe Mountain Lodge. This 21,000-square-foot facility has 19 treatment rooms, a fitness center, and an outdoor pool and hot tub. In addition to the expected array of facials, scrubs, and massages for adults, the spa offers a separate program for kids. Spa at the Woodstock Inn and Resort. The spa features a stunning 10,000-square-foot nature-inspired facility with 10 treatment rooms, a full-service salon, and sophisticated shop dedicated to wellness and relaxation. The elegant, minimalist design accentuates its beautiful setting: natural light pours into the sparking dressing rooms and the comfortable firelit Great Room. An outdoor meditation courtyard has a soaking pool and a Scandinavian-style sauna that face the sky. The mood is peaceful, quiet and serene; choose from a wide array of treatments and organic products. Each season has its own 100-minute signature treatment. Out of the Woods Spa at Twin Farms. A visit to Twin Farms is a trip to another world, and a treatment at the on-site spa completes the journey. Set in the woods of the charming estate of Nobel Prize–winning writer Sinclair Lewis, the spa expounds a philosophy of wellness that goes well beyond the realm of massages and skin treatments. Employing an organic product line by Vermont-based Tata Harper and Lunaroma, the spa offers a range of facials, polishes, aromatherapy, and mud wraps, but the star remains the 120-minute Ultimate Body Treatment, which administers a heavenly reboot to your skin and muscles.
