The dining room in this 1796 brick farmhouse breathes 18th century, but the food is decidedly 21st century. Former San Francisco restaurant chef-owners Will Dodson and Ruth Schimmelpfennig create inventive four-course prix-fixe menus with delicacies such as beef carpaccio and pan-seared escolar in lemon-and-caper herb butter. In the back is a local favorite, Max's Tavern, which serves upscale pub fare such as beef with Gorgonzola mashed potatoes and panfried trout with almond beurre noisette (browned butter).

We return to the Barnard Inn Restaurant and Max's Tavern every time we're in Vermont. The food is outstanding, the setting idyllic, and you're always made to feel at home. You'll never want to leave! Enjoy!
